So what is the minimum spec’s for old machines.
Well the 32 bit 64 bit argument aside. You want at least 1 gig processor and
512 of ram. Anything less and yes it will work but, painfully slow.
Do all Linux distro’s work on all machines? Well….
Pretty much, you may have to know what force pae means, or find
a distro with the right CPU architecture, (32/64 bit) most will tell you if it will or won’t.
Increasingly more Linux distro’s have the option or
what is called a Net-install, you still have to download and burn a disk,
but with net-install your o/s is tailor made to you hardware.
So you have been given an old laptop with no charger and a dead battery.
Maybe you bough one at a yard sale, or from the Goodwill store, what we usest to call a second hand store.
What to do?
Well ebay.com is still a good choice, unless you have that guy in your town,
you know, he has every part know to man, in his basement.
Note: Don’t go in his basement, you will leave with ten old computers because you couldn’t beat the price.
Linux for real old computers and laptops.
First choice would be Knoppix 6
Second choice would be Tiny Core
Third would be Lubuntu
Fourth would be Puppy (slacko) Linux
Another good choice is Simplicity Linux
And what list would be complete without Debian.
